From Renoir to Rap
Christian Breed
This course will deal with the relationship between French culture and the culture of its former African colonies, from Matisse and Moroccan art, to Picasso and sub-Saharan African sculpture, closing with post-colonial forms of expression in French culture today. Focus will be maintained on the differences between colonial and post-colonial culture and dialogue, and on the potential cultural effects of relevant events such as the Arab Spring, the 2005 Paris riots, and the recent burqa ban in France. Sharpening students’ critical-thinking skills while introducing them to extra-American artistic and cultural realities that are becoming increasingly prominent on the world stage, students will learn to challenge their notions of contemporary art by placing it in an inter-cultural context.
Please note that course availability is contingent on sufficient enrollment and that classes are subject to cancellation.
